BLOOMINGDALE — Health technology students at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School have a new virtual learning tool with the addition of an Anatomy table in their lab.
Instructor Tammy Sismondo said the $71,000 table arrived at school’s end last spring but will be put to use this term to benefit students venturing into the health care field. The 6-foot-long table features a dual touchscreen surface which gives students a 3-D view of the various organs and system functions of the human body.
“We got the table through a grant from the Mary Jane Brooks Charitable Trust,” Sismondo said. “It brings anatomy to life. We can do lectures and lab reviews and students can see how it looks in the actual body.”
She continued that her 28 juniors and seniors can view more than 1,300 clinical cases from brain aneurysms to tumors as well as X-rays and virtual autopsies. Quizzes and games are included while the table even has images of animals that can be used for instruction in the small animal science program. JVS officials also acquired a large television screen to project the images and the equipment includes curriculum to aid instruction.
Sismondo, who was grateful for the contribution by the Steubenville-based foundation, said the table provides the health tech program with a realistic, state-of-the-art approach to help students learn.
“It’s amazing for enhancing their education. It’s different from a book because you are seeing the anatomy in 3-D,” Sismondo continued. “I was really excited to get it because it’s a nice, hands-on tool for students to use when they are learning foundational skills. It’s also a great surgical tech tool and students are good with technology and work with it all of the time.”
