The Pittsburgh Pirates are on the clock.
After winning the first MLB draft lottery, the Pirates hold the No. 1 pick in this Sunday’s draft in Seattle.
The draft features 20 rounds across the three days, including the first two rounds, compensatory rounds and competitive balance rounds on the opening night of the draft.
The Pirates, Washington Nationals and Oakland A’s had the highest odds (16.5 percent each) to get the No. 1 pick by virtue of having the three worst records in 2022. The Nationals landed the second pick, the A’s the third.
The Pirates have plenty of big-name prospects to choose from, including two standouts from the NCAA champion LSU Tigers — right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes and outfielder Dylan Crews — who are projected to go first and second overall.

When and where is the 2023 MLB draft?
The draft starts Sunday, July 9 at 7 pm ET with Rounds 1 and 2 in Seattle at Lumen Field — home of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. Rounds 3-10 start at 2 pm ET Monday, and Rounds 11-20 start at 2 pm ET Tuesday.

For the sixth time in history, the Pittsburgh Pirates will have the top selection. The Pirates won MLB’s first Draft Lottery in December at the Winter Meetings.

What is the first round order of the MLB draft?
The first six picks in the draft were determined at MLB’s inaugural Draft Lottery held at the Winter Meetings in December. The Pirates won the lottery and held the first pick in the draft for the second time in three years. Starting with the seventh selection, the remaining order is determined by the reverse order of finish at the close of the previous season among the remaining non-postseason teams. The Dodgers and Mets had their first pick pushed back 10 spots because they went over the competitive-balance tax threshold.
