Springs Ladies United FC is determined to give female footballers in Slovo Park an opportunity to take their careers to the next level.
The club’s goal is to provide girls and young women with a safe space to express themselves while combating the scourge of substance, child and women abuse.
They compete in the regional league, which is part of South Africa’s third tier of ladies’ soccer.
Founder of the club, Thabiso Mohlala, said last year was a learning curve as it was their first season of playing.
However, with bigger plans in line for the club, it aims to raise the flag of Springs to greater heights.
“We have overcome many challenges since our inception, but we have since mastered the art of keeping the eyes on the ball,” said Mohlala.
He explained that sponsorships are one of the many challenges that the club faces.
“Springs Ladies United FC needs assistance as we struggled last season,” he said.
“Especially with transportation for the players, on home and away games, as we travel all over Ekurhuleni.”
With only one division, the club accommodates players aged from 11 to 22.
“This is because more divisions for female soccer development are still a challenge for a senior team, but we are hopeful that we’ll eventually get better,” said Mohlala.
In expanding the team, the club will host soccer trials for women on February 11 at Pam Brink Stadium, where selected players will form part of this year’s Safa Ekurhuleni Women’s Regional League squad.
