Cote named new interim coach of USask Huskies
Swift Current’s Brandin Cote is the new interim head coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team.
The news came as longtime NHL coach Mike Babcock resigned as the Huskies’ head coach after just one season.
Cote joined Babcock’s staff last year after three seasons as an assistant coach for the Swift Current Broncos.
His first game as head coach will be on September 9 when the Huskies host the U of R Cougars in an exhibition game.
Riders visit BC for rematch
Cody Fajardo will start for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they head to Vancouver for a rematch with the BC Lions tonight.
Fajardo, who’s been struggling with a knee injury, was pulled for Mason Fine in the second quarter of last week’s 28-10 loss to the Lions, who lost star Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke long-term to a foot injury. Fellow Canadian QB Michael O’Connor will start for the Leos tonight.

The Riders also announced on Thursday that next Sunday’s Labor Day Classic against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was sold out. The Banjo Bowl rematch in Winnipeg sold out about a week ago.
Last night in the CFL, Zach Collaros threw two touchdown passes as the Bombers beat the Calgary Stampeders 31-29. Jake Maier, who got the start for Calgary over Bo Levi Mitchell, threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns.
Blue Jays escape ninth-inning jam to sweep Red Sox
The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox in extra innings for the second straight game in a 6-5 decision to complete the series sweep.
The Jays escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth with a Jordan Romano strikeout and a spectacular double play by Matt Chapman. George Springer brought in Cavan Biggio for the winning run in the 10th.
The Jays return home tonight after winning six games in their seven-game road swing, and will host the Los Angeles Angels for three games this weekend. Mitch White will make his second start with the Jays tonight against Reid Detmers, and a pair of aces will deal tomorrow with Toronto’s Alek Manoah facing two-way star Shoei Ohtani.
Canada opens the Women’s Worlds with a win
Team Canada opened the Women’s World Hockey Championship with a 4-1 win over Finland on Thursday in Denmark.
Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Nurse each had a goal and an assist for Canada, who face Switzerland on Saturday and Japan on Sunday in their next round-robin games.
Reto holds clubhouse lead at CP Women’s Open, Henderson seven shots back
South Africa’s Paula Reto fired a course record 9-under 62 to take the lead after round one of the CP Canadian Women’s Open in Ottawa.
That record was held by Brooke Henderson of nearby Smiths Falls, Ontario. The 12-time LPGA Tour winner is in a tie for 51st after scoring 69 in the first round.
Alena Sharp and Maddie Szeryk are the top Canadians in a tie for 16th.
Canada stays perfect in FIBA World Cup qualifying
Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous Alexander had a team high 23 points as Canada’s men’s basketball team stayed perfect in FIBA World Cup Qualifying with a 99-87 win over Argentina last night in Victoria, BC.
Canada is 7-0 in qualifying for next year’s basketball World Cup, which is a direct qualifier to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
SCSCA racing under the lights this weekend
There’s some racing under the lights this weekend as the Swift Current Stock Car Association returns to the track at Kinetic Exhibition Park.
The minis, streets and IMCA Modifieds will be racing starting at 7:00pm tonight and tomorrow.
