Soccer Set for Road Showdown with Dayton

Kent, Ohio – The Kent State soccer team will hit the highway heading west for its first road test of the season on Sunday, when they face off against Dayton at 1 p.m.

The match can be watched on ESPN+.

About the Flashes

Kent State heads into this matchup after a week of rest, not having played since last Sunday against Oakland. The Golden Flashes fell 2-0 to the Golden Grizzlies after opening the season with a 1-1 draw against Cleveland State.

Junior Callie Cunningham owns the lone goal for the Flashes so far on the young season, booting the ball past the Cleveland State keeper after a Tianna Harris header was knocked down in the first half of the season opener. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Melén has tallied eight saves through two games, the fifth-highest total in the MAC.

Scouting the Flyers

Dayton (2-1-0) was picked to finish second and received one first-place vote in the Atlantic 10 Coaches Preseason Poll after going 8-2 in conference play last year. The Flyers earned a 2-2 draw in the season opener against Toledo and have since won two straight, topping Wright State and Northern Kentucky.

The Flashes’ back line will have to keep tabs on forward Itala Gemelli all match. The junior earned A-10 Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the Flyers with 12 goals and 28 points. After being named to the 2022 A-10 Preseason All-Conference team, Gemelli has three goals and one assist through three matches.
