Soccer: Napoli ‘proved something to themselves’ with Juve win – English

(ANSA) – ROME, JAN 16 – Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti has said that, rather than sending a signal to their title rivals with last weekend’s 5-1 drubbing of Juventus, his men had actually shown something to themselves.

The Naples side moved nine points clear at the top of the table as the season approaches the half-way mark after second-placed AC Milan were held 2-2 at Lecce.

Juve are one point further back, on 37 points from 18 games, after the defeat.

Fourth-placed Inter also have 37 points thanks to a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona at San Siro.

“It’s in Napoli’s DNA to keep the ball and move it around quickly,” Spalletti said.

“We’re very good at that and I think our mentality was clearly on display.

“We must always set out to take the game to the opposition because that’s what we’re good at.

“We aren’t afraid and we don’t shy away from our strategy. The aim is to occupy the opposition’s half confidently and constantly.

“I think it (the result) is a message to ourselves because sometimes you don’t realize how good you are.

“Juventus are a colossal team who came into this on the back of an impressive run and we showed this evening we’re a top team ourselves.” (ANSA).
