(ANSA) – ROME, OCT 18 – England boss Gareth Southgate should call up Chris Smalling, AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho said after the defender turned in the latest in a series of excellent performances in his side’s 1-0 win at Sampdoria on Monday.
The 32-year-old center back has 31 England caps but has not played for the national team since 2017.
“Smalling was super,” Mourinho said.
“I have never coached a national team but I have the feeling that, if you are taking part in tournaments like the World Cup or the Euros, you have to take players who can give you different options and he is one of those.
“If I were the national team coach, I’d want him in my squad.
“I know that Southgate is a guy who is highly respectful of other people’s work and I don’t think I’m disrespecting him by saying that, if a player is playing at this level, he should have this chance.
“But it’s for him to decide”. (ANSA).
