Here’s what to expect at our upcoming event Soccer for Everyone match on Aug 27:
1) We welcome the You Can Play team!
You Can Play’s mission is ensuring safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ athletes, coaches, and fans. You Can Play believes sports teams should focus on the athlete’s skills, work ethic, and competitive spirit, not their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. YCP is helping us build our Pride 365 initiative which is our year-long commitment to inclusivity, gaining and sharing knowledge, and ongoing support of the LGBTQ community. You Can Play will be set up in the concourse. Learn more about You Can Play HERE.
2) We welcome Capital Pride
The Capital Pride festivities run from August 21-28 all around Ottawa. This year’s theme is ‘All Together Now’. This is an opportunity to connect, celebrate, educate and advocate. A tonne of events await like the Family Picnic in Hintonburg Park, the flag raising at City Hall, the Capital Pride Pageant at the NAC and the Capital Pride Parade on Aug 28. HERE is a list of all events. Year after year Capital Pride works around the clock to create a fun, safe and meaningful series of events. They will be in attendance at our match on Sat Aug 27 and are graciously providing the large Pride flag for our opening ceremonies.
3) We welcome Capital Rainbow Refuge
The CRR is a non-profit organization that sponsors and supports LGBTQI+ refugees from all around the world. In nearly 70 countries, LGBTQI+ communities remain criminalized. Sexual and gender minorities face unimaginable human rights violations perpetrated by families, communities, police and the state. This ranges from barriers to employment, housing, healthcare and education… to jail, torture or death. Many LGBTQI+ people are forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in other countries where their safety is also at risk. Learn more about CRR HERE.
4) We welcome Bhangrascape
Bhangrascape brings Bhangra to the people! An Ottawa-based, high energy dance troop focused on this folk dance originating from the land of Punjab. See them live at halftime! Learn more about Bhangrascape HERE.
4) The Captain’s Armband
Look for Captain Carl or Captain Drew to be wearing the Pride-inspired captain’s armband for this match. We will be auctioning this off after the match. We’ll also have Pride-inspired corner flags. Keep your eyes peeled!
