Soccer Falls 2-1 to Eastern Kentucky in Home Opener

Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Senior captain Maggie Shaw pushed a header into the goal in the second half to cut the Eastern Kentucky lead in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for the Chattanooga Mocs who fell 2-1 in non-conference women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at the UTC Sports Complex .

“The result, obviously, wasn’t what we wanted,” head coach Gavin McKinney said following the match. “It wasn’t from lack of effort. We created chances towards the end of it, but we dug ourselves a hole early in the match and couldn’t bounce back from it.”

Shaw picked up the ball on a free kick by Grace Klippenstein in the 53rd minute to cut the lead in half. The Mocs outshot EKU 16-13 with an 8-7 shots on goal advantage, but it would be the Colonels who scored a pair of first half goals for their first win of the year.

“It was a good ball by Grace and a great header by Maggie,” McKinney said. “We’ve been around the game long enough when you’re down 2-nil in the game you can still come back from it. It was good to get that first one back. We pushed on for the second one, but just couldn’t don’t find it.”

All three of Shaw’s shots were on goal while freshman Zoey Mize tipped three towards the net with one on goal. Mackenzie Smith, Shelby Hash and Birna Johannsdottir each had two shots for the Mocs.

Freshman keeper Caroline Ekern tallied 65 minutes between the posts and pulled down four saves in her collegiate debut. Eastern Kentucky’s Lauren Seedlock had seven saves in her 90 minutes in goal.

The Colonels first goal came at the 12:15 mark of the match from Myla Sharpless for her second of the season and it wouldn’t take long for Lucy Ream’s game winner to find the mark in the 17th minutes.

Eastern Kentucky improves to 1-1 overall while Chattanooga falls to 0-2. The Mocs will hit the road Thursday, August 25 to take on Georgia State in Atlanta for the first in a three-game road swing. The match kicks off at 7:00 pm
