Back in November 2022, the leaker Moore’s Law is Dead claimed that users were ignoring the RTX 4080 in favor of the RTX 4090. As such, the RTX 4090 units were moving at a healthy pace. Now, the leaker suggests that the rate at which the RTX 4090 GPUs are selling is slowing down. The information comes to Tom courtesy of retail sources inside and outside the US.
A source who allegedly works at Microcenter suggested to Tom that the RTX 4090 GPUs are “noticeably” taking longer to sell as the cards aren’t selling out within hours like earlier but take a day or two. The source also claimed that the RTX 4090 priced above US$1,900 are effectively not selling.
Interestingly, a different source mentioned to Tom that although both the RX 7900 XTX and the RTX 4090 cards are in demand, sales of the Nvidia flagship are experiencing a slowdown. According to the source, it takes about a week to sell through the RTX 4090 inventory rather than on day 1 as it has been the case since launch. However, last-gen RTX 30 GPUs appear to be quite popular as the source describes them as “selling like hotcakes”.
A couple of other insiders painted a more dismal picture of the RTX 40 sales. An insider that works for a US retailer claimed that “the 40-series basically isn’t selling in 2023”, while another one allegedly working for a major retail firm outside the US mentioned that the retailer managed to sell only one of the dozen RTX 4090 it received in January. Additionally, both sources reported that last-gen boards with discounted or MSRP rates are the hot ticket items, especially the mid-range RTX 3070, RTX 3060 Ti, etc.
Aside from being considerably cheaper than the released RTX 40 and RDNA 3 offerings, last-gen mid-range GPUs haven’t received next-gen alternatives yet which explains why cash-strapped customers are flocking to these cheaper options.
Moreover, AMD’s RDNA 2 RX 6000 and RDNA 3 RX 7000 cards appear to be moving at a rapid pace as a major retailer claimed the boards are “selling as fast as we get them”. The same source also shared a damning statement about that Intel Arc sales claiming “ARC sales are as dead as their department”.
Finally, the RX 7900 XTX looks like a fan favorite at least according to one MLID informant. The person reported that they have “never seen a RADEON flagship card sell this well in the past 10 years”. The board is in such high demand that “people are willing to pay a tad over MSPR for 3×8-Pin AIB models”.
It bears repeating that you should always take unconfirmed reports such as the one presented here with caution.
