Shough tabbed to Johnny Unitas Award watch list

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior quarterback Tyler Shough was recognized on his second watch list Wednesday afternoon as he was tabbed a preseason candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

This is the second consecutive season Shough has been named to the Golden Arm watch list as he was one of 76 quarterbacks from across the country that were recognized. It is the preseason watch list of the season for Shough, who was named a candidate for the Reese’s Senior Bowl earlier in the day.

Shough, who was tabbed Texas Tech’s starting quarterback by head coach Joey McGuire on Sunday evening, will make the 12th start of his career Sept. 3 when he leads the Red Raiders against Murray State. The senior is 8-4 all-time as a starter, which includes a 3-1 mark as a Red Raider.

Shough was injured during Texas Tech’s Big 12 opener a year ago at Texas, cutting his debut season short after only four games. He has thrown for 2,575 yards and 22 touchdowns over 19 career games between Texas Tech and Oregon where he has completed 66.4 percent of his passes. Shough completed 69.6 percent of his passes (64-of-92) during his debut season as a Red Raider a year ago, throwing for 872 yards and six touchdowns prior to his injury.

A native of Chandler, Arizona, Shough was joined earlier in the day on the Reese’s Senior Bowl watch list alongside teammates Tyree Wilson, SaRodorick Thompson, Reggie Pearson Jr. and Adrian Frye.

The Red Raiders open the 2022 season in exactly 10 days when Texas Tech welcomes Murray State to Jones AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm with coverage provided via Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
