One Long Island hockey fan had his hopes and dreams shattered within a matter of seconds last night, when his girlfriend appeared to brutally shut down his very public marriage proposal.
Stumping up immense courage, the unidentified man took his shirt off — his chest romantically emblazoned with ‘Plz say yes yes yes’ — and got down on one knee in front of 17,255 fans on opening night of the Islanders’ NHL season vs. the Florida Panthers.
A gathering of fans chanted ‘just say no’, and the mystery woman duly obliged. After a brief exchange with her boyfriend, she emotionally stormed away as he looked stunned and defeated. It seems Bruno Mars’ ‘Marry You’, which echoed in the background, was not enough to sway her.

It is unclear whether she returned to the seats, however her man was seen trudging back into the comfort of his before embracing the solace of his beer.
While the broadcast reported that the woman said yes in the immediate aftermath of the proposal, social media and press reports suggest otherwise.
Senior NHL.com writer Dan Rosen reported the woman ‘flat out left’, while another Twitter user, who was in close proximity, said the woman replied ‘No! No! No!’

Conspiracies circulated on Twitter suggesting it could have been a fake but that was shut down by the same man who revealed she said no, adding the crestfallen gentleman sat ‘shirtless for 2 min tearing up’ following the apparent rejection.

Following the proposal, which was briefly shown on the NHL broadcast, the Islanders tweeted out a photo of the man on one knee with a caption asking ‘Did she say yes or no? #IslesNation needs to know.’
As if things couldn’t get any worse for the Long Island fan, the Florida Panthers scored just seconds after the seemingly failed proposal.
His night did not get any easier as the road team went on to win their opening game of the NHL season 3-1.
