Sergio Garcia was pictured pitchside at a college football match not long after he withdrew from the BMW PGA Championship following a first round score of four-over par.

The golfer then attended the Texas versus Alabama college football game at the DKR Texas Memorial Stadium, which Alabama won 20-19.

He had withdrawn from the competition just hours before without giving any reason, and due to the nature of the exit from Garcia no reserve was able to take his place.

This is because Garcia left the competition after he had started his first round, which meant no one could come in to take his place.

The first reserve for the competition was Spanish golfer Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, but he missed out on the chance to play at Wentworth.

Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir tweeted: ‘Jon Rahm told me on Tuesday it was particularly personal for him that certain players were in the field this week as his good friend Alfredo Garcia-Heredia was first reserve.

‘Had Sergio García withdrawn before his opening round rather than after it, AGH would have played.’

Soren Kjeldsen and Viktor Hovland currently lead the way in the competition with scores of 12 under.

Whereas Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy is tied for third with a score of 11 under.
