Seguin, Stars rally for OT win against Senators

  • by

Tyler Seguin scored with 29 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 win against the Ottawa Senators at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on Thursday.

“It’s a funny game,” Seguin said. “I feel like I’m playing well the last couple games, a lot of chances, no finish. Tonight, I thought I [stunk] and scored the overtime winner. Definitely felt good.”

Wyatt Johnston stole the puck from the Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson and fed Seguin in front, where he scored with a snap shot glove side on Anton Forsberg for his first goal in 10 games.

“[Johnston] makes the play, right, a second effort to get the puck back,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “A great play by a young guy. If he wasn’t our best forward, he was in that conversation, so he deserved to be out there.”

Miro Heiskanen scored twice, Nils Lundkvist had a goal and an assist, and Jake Oettinger made 28 saves for Dallas (15-7-5), which won beyond regulation for the first time in six tries this season.

Lundkvist tied it 3-3 at 14:54 of the third period with a knuckling point shot that deceived Forsberg.

“It wasn’t our best,” Seguin admitted. “Like I said, it wasn’t my best. We just found a way to win tonight.”

Thomas Chabot scored for the third straight game, and Forsberg made 28 saves for Ottawa (10-14-2).

“Down 2-0 early, and not a couple of great goals [against], but stayed with it and battled,” Senators coach DJ Smith said. “I thought we played a really good game. To lose that way in overtime, it hurts, but in saying that, that’s a really good team and we had all kinds of opportunities to win.”

Heiskanen gave the Stars a 1-0 lead at 5:07 of the first period when he took a cross-slot pass from Roope Hintz and beat Forsberg glove side with a wrist shot.

He scored again at 6:55 when he skated wide around an Ottawa defenseman Nick Holden and scored with a short side wrist shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle to make it 2-0.

“Miro’s adding layers to his game,” DeBoer said. “We’re asking an awful lot of him: defend, score, play 28 minutes, do everything. I’m a little worried about wearing him out, overusing him, asking too much of him, because it’s a long season. But he’s a great player and he can do just about anything out there.”

Derick Brassard from one-timed a pass Drake Batherson in the slot to cut it to 2-1 at 13:52.

Chabot’s slap shot from the point deflected in off Dallas center Luke Glendening to tie it 2-2 at 18:47. Chabot has six points (three goals, three assists) in his past four games.

“We bounced back right away and we answered the bell,” Chabot said. “I mean, it could’ve easily gone the other way. … Everybody stepped up their game and we came right back in the game and we made it a game.”

Travis Hamonic from a redirected centering pass Alex DeBrincat to give the Senators a 3-2 lead at 1:27 of the third period.

“The first six or seven minutes weren’t ideal for us,” Hamonic said. “But to get down 2-0 in a really hard building to play in against one of the better teams in the League, I thought we showed a lot of resilience to fight back and get ourselves back in the game, for the most part. I think we carried some of the game.”
