Aztecs move to SD Sports 760
SAN DIEGO – Beginning Thursday, Sept. 1, San Diego State Athletics will have a new radio home when San Diego Sports 760 launches at 6 am PT, as announced by the Aztecs’ radio partner iHeartMedia San Diego.
San Diego Sports 760, heard throughout every corner of San Diego County and beyond, has a long history of providing unparalleled sports talk and play-by-play in Southern California, initially serving as the flagship home for San Diego State Athletics in 1972. The venerable station has also housed the Padres as well as NFL broadcasts throughout its storied history.
With the opening of SDSU’s state-of-the-art Snapdragon Stadium in Mission Valley, the legendary Ted Leitner will continue his play-by-play responsibilities for the Aztec football team this season, while Rich Ohrnberger retains his color commentary duties.
Leitner is one of the most recognizable media figures in San Diego, where he has served as the voice of the Aztecs, Padres and the former San Diego Chargers on both radio and television. The Oklahoma State graduate has been a part of the San Diego State scene as far back as 1978, including the past two decades with the Aztec football program.
Leitner will also find himself behind the microphone when the SDSU men’s basketball team opens its 2022-23 campaign later this fall.
A morning show host on San Diego Sports 760, which airs weekdays from 6-9 pm PT, Ohrnberger is entering his sixth season as color analyst on the Aztec Radio Network. Ohrnberger played 39 games on the offensive line across five seasons with the NFL’s New England Patriots, Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers. As a collegian, Ohrnberger was a two-time all-Big Ten selection at Penn State, earning first-team honors as a senior in 2008.
The SDSU football gameday personalities also feature Mike Costa, who will continue his role as sideline reporter for all Aztec home games, while Jon Schaeffer will host the two-hour pregame show, along with former SDSU standout wide receiver JR Tolver. In addition, Schaffer will host the Aztec halftime show and postgame wrap-up.
Costa, an SDSU alum and a longtime sports personality in San Diego, has also served as a sideline reporter for NFL radio broadcasts.
Schaeffer, who returns for his sixth season on the Aztec Radio Network, co-hosts “Jon and Jim” on San Diego Sports 760, heard weekdays from 3-6 pm PT. The show was recently named the best sports talk show in San Diego by the Union-Tribune’s Readers Poll.
Meanwhile, Tolver is also back for a sixth season as well on the Aztec Radio Network following a standout career at San Diego State from 1999-2002. As a collegian on The Mesa, Tolver established numerous school records, including career receptions (262), career yards (3,572) and 100-yard games (13, tied). In 2002, Tolver garnered third-team All-America honors from the Sporting News and was a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, signifying the top wide receiver in the nation. Additionally, he was a three-time all-Mountain West pick, including a first-team honoree as a senior in 2002.
San Diego State opens its 2022 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 3, when it plays host to Arizona in the inaugural game at Snapdragon Stadium, starting at 12:30 pm PT.
