Schultz first-half goal pushes Texas Tech to draw with New Mexico

LUBBOCK, Texas – Macy Schultz scored her first goal of the season to push Texas Tech to a 1-1 draw against the reigning Mountain West champions New Mexico Thursday at the John Walker Soccer Complex.

Schultz put away a shot off a pass from Macy Blackburn to give the Red Raiders (1-1-1) a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the matchup. Blackburn now has all three assists on Tech’s three goals this season.

“It was another really good performance by our team,” head coach Tom Stone said. “These girls are playing really well. We are young, but we promised to be patient with some of the young mistakes that we know are going to happen. We’re dealing with growing pains, but we created most of the chances tonight. We were on top for most of the match.”

Following Tech’s early goal, the match quickly became a defensive battle as neither side produced more than five shots through the remaining 39 minutes.

However, New Mexico (1-1-1) found a way to even the match in the 39thth minute as Jadyn Edwards produced her own moment and found the back of the net.

Coming out of the half, both teams picked up pace looking to find the equalizer. Ashley Williams worked her way around a defender and fired off a shot in the 58th minute that the Lobo keeper was able to make a play on.

Tech’s defense held the Lobos without a shot through from the 48th minute to the end of the match. Tech keeper Madison White recorded a pair of saves on the night, doubling her season total.
