Rochester district golf notes | Shepparton News

Winner: Rochester Golf Club A grade champion for 2022 was Shane Bywaters. He received his title from acting captain Darren White via text.

Rochester Golf

Although starting six shots behind in the men’s championship, in-form golfer Shane Bywaters quickly caught up five at the halfway mark on reigning champion Jake Wright in last Saturday’s final round.

Bywaters then birdied the 10th hole to square the match, however, Wright leveled with his own birdie three on 11.

That put him once again ahead by one shot. The lead swapped back and forth over the long holes of 13, 14 and 15, but (unfortunately) Wright’s bogies on holes 16 and 17 put Bywaters back in front to by two.

After both parred the short 18th, Bywaters was declared the club’s A grade 2022 champion and added to his two previous trophies.

Bywaters two over the card 73 was also the best score of the day and taking out the best net on 69. Former champion and club President Leigh Hicks was runner up for his 78 (73) and Robert Vise’s (76), following best were recorded by Chris Eeles and Garry Charnas both on (76), Robert Ralph, Wright and Richard Feuk all on (77).

Eeles had some nervous moments after losing four shots to his nearest challenger in B grade David Geebie on the opening hole. After some scratchy golf early on both settled down, however, Eeles was more consistent, especially off the tee to easily take out the club’s B grade championship for a total of 271 over the three rounds. Eeles shot to within two meters on 16 and won him a ball while Charnas was closest to the line on 10.

Players will welcome playing off the short white course markers this Saturday after many struggled to maintain their handicaps from the blue back tees over the past three weeks. Please arrive by 11.45am as a draw for partners will take place at noon for a 4-ball Stableford multiplier, which always accounts for some interesting scores and combinations.

Our local Miter 10 store is sponsoring a 4 ball on Friday, September 6. Teams can be mixed if desired, so keep this date free as the course is in excellent condition after the rains and now heading into spring. All looks good for a great few golfing months ahead.

Straightest drive went to Denise. Next week is a pair event.
