Road matchup against Purdue Fort Wayne up next for women’s soccer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Another opponent from the Horizon League is on tap for the Bellarmine University women’s soccer team.

The Knights (0-1-1) will take on their third straight foe from the conference when they travel to Purdue Fort Wayne (1-1-1) for a 3 pm (ET) meeting Sunday.

Bellarmine opened the year with a 2-1 home loss to Wright State before playing to a scoreless tie Thursday at IUPUI. Both are colleagues of Purdue Fort Wayne in the Horizon League. The Knights were supposed to welcome the MVC’s Southern Illinois between those two contests, but the match was postponed late in the first half due to inclement weather.

Stalemates have defined Bellarmine’s results against Horizon League opponents. In the last two seasons, the Knights are 0-1-4 against foes from the conference. Bellarmine and the Mastodons deadlocked 1-1 last season at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

As far as outcomes, Purdue Fort Wayne ran the gauntlet over its first three matches. The Mastodons opened the season with a 4-1 home win over Chicago State, lost 2-0 at Eastern Illinois and tied Toledo 1-1 on the road.

Mackenzie Evans is pacing Purdue Fort Wayne with two goals. Kelsey Gallagher recorded the game-winner against Chicago State. Samantha Castaneda started all three games in goal and had an eight-save effort against Toledo.

Bellarmine notched its first tie of the season Thursday against IUPUI after having eight draws last year. The shots were even at seven apiece, but the Knights carried a 4-1 edge on the frame.

The defense limited IUPUI to only two shots in the first half en route to the clean sheet. Sophomore Cambria Kingman and senior Elyssa Francisin her first action of the season after returning from injury, combined for the shutout in goal.
