What is the TGL?

The TGL is a new tech-infused golf league that will partner with the PGA Tour. The league is set to give fans more golf throughout the calendar year. The virtual match play will provide a reimagined look at the sport.

Play is expected to begin in January 2024.

The TGL is expected to feature 18 PGA Tour golfers that will compete in three-man teams. The golfers will compete in a virtual match play that includes a short-game complex for chipping and putting.

There will be 15 regular-season matches slated to take place on Monday nights. There will also be postseason play to crown a champion. The virtual matches will be two hours and feature 18 holes in primetime television.

“I have the utmost respect for the game of golf, and the TGL, while rooted in the traditions of the game, is taking a bold step into the increasingly tech-fueled future of sports,” McIlroy said. “TGL will tap into the appeal of team golf within an exciting, fan-friendly environment, comparable to sitting courtside at an NBA game. TGL will widen the appeal of golf to younger and more diverse fans and serve as another avenue to introduce people to the game I love.”

Who is playing in the TGL?

Several PGA champions have signed up for the new league alongside Woods, McIlroy and Fowler. The participants include Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Scott, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, Max Homa and Billy Horschel.

Six more golfers are set to be added in the coming weeks. Each golfer will make up six three-man teams for the virtual match play.

What is the TGL format?

In addition to the 15 regular-season matches, there will also be postseason play that includes a semifinal and final to determine a champion. The virtual match play is designed for 18 holes and includes a short-game complex as well.

Will the TGL be televised?

The TGL is expected to be broadcast Monday nights in prime time. Fans will be able to watch all the action as the league begins its inaugural season.

“As soon as I learned about TGL, I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it,” Rahm said. “As an avid user of the latest tech in golf with launch monitors, simulators and virtual greens and my personal passion for gaming , I immediately recognized the potential for TGL to introduce golf to a broader global audience — especially younger fans. I’m proud to announce my commitment to compete and help shape the future of golf for the next generation.”
