A report Tuesday from Joe Flint and Miles Kruppa of The Wall Street Journal shook up the football world.
In their exclusive, the reporters said the NFL is nearing a deal with YouTube to transfer exclusive rights to Sunday Ticket over to the video streaming platform.
This deal would be a massive boon to YouTube. An alternative to purchasing RedZone or Sunday Ticket through traditional cable means would almost certainly introduce YouTube to legions of new followers and subscribers.
In the Wall Street Journal report, Flint and Kruppa indicated terms for this transaction could be reached as soon as tomorrow. The reporters further expounded on the ramifications of this arrangement.
“A potential move of Sunday Ticket to YouTube is further evidence of major sports migrating from traditional TV, which has been hit by cord-cutting, to streaming and tech companies who are willing to spend heavily on content,” Flint and Kruppa wrote.
“The addition of Sunday Ticket would provide a boost to YouTube’s streaming efforts as the video platform attempts to broaden beyond advertising sales into subscription revenue.”
As Tuesday’s report alluded to, the National Hockey League and Major League Baseball each have similar streaming deals in place with Apple. This development between the NFL and YouTube would represent a progressive step in a similar direction
