Red Wings’ Jakub Vrana enters NHL/NHLPA’s player assistance program

Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana will be unavailable from the team for an indefinite period “while he receives care from the player assistance program of the NHL and NHLPA,” the NHL and NHL Players Association announced Wednesday.

Vrana will continue to be paid while he receives treatment through the joint program. Vrana can return to the Red Wings once he is cleared for on-ice play by the program administrators. The care administered to Vrana is in accordance with the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

The NHL and NHLPA started the player assistance program in 1996. The jointly funded program assists players and their families with mental health, substance abuse and other matters.

Vrana, 26, was selected no. 13 at the 2014 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals. He won a Stanley Cup with the Capitals in the 2017-18 season. Vrana arrived to the Red Wings via trade on April 12, 2021, which sent Anthony Mantha to the Capitals.

Vrana played two games thus far during the 2022-23 season, recording one goal and one assist.
