THE QUICK HITS:

Last Time Out: After arriving in Edmonton 3-0 and having allowed just three goals against in those three games, Thursday’s outcome was a vastly different one for the Canes. The Oilers’ dynamic offense put up a six-spot, three by way of special teams. Although the end result was a 6-4 defeat, Andrei Svechnikov recorded his first career regular season hat trick. Sebastian Aho posted three points for a second consecutive game and Martin Necas produced his seventh point in four outings.

Video: CAR Recap: Svechnikov nets hat trick in 6-4 loss

Svech’s Stellar Week: Carolina’s 2018 first round pick was already having himself a nice start to the season, scoring twice in Monday’s win over Seattle. Then he took it to a new level Thursday. Showcasing his blistering shot, #37 beat Jack Campbell a trio of times to single-handedly keep his club in the contest. Now with eight points in four games to start the season, it would not be at all surprising to hear Andrei named as one of the league’s Stars of the Week come Monday.

(Almost) Atop The Leaderboard: Entering Saturday only Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning has more goals (7) than Svechnikov.

Hot Out Of The Gate: Both Svechnikov and Necas have recorded at least one point in each game so far this season for Carolina.

History For Slavo: Earning an assist on Svechnikov’s first of three goals Thursday was defenseman Jacob Slavin, who set a new team record with it. The helper gives Slavin 174 in his career, passing Justin Faulk for sole possession of the most all-time by a defenseman in Canes history. He now trails only Glen Wesley (178) and Dave Babych (196) for the most all-time hits in Canes/Whalers franchise history.

We Know Coaching: Tonight’s matchup sees the two most recent Jack Adams Award winners lead their teams head-to-head against one another. Calgary’s Darryl Sutter won the award for the 2021-22 campaign, preceded by Rod Brind’Amour the year before.

Take Advantage When You Can: A key to the success for both clubs entering tonight is holding their opponents to a limited amount of chances. Entering tonight the two teams rank tied for third in the league, allowing an average of just 26.8 shots against per night. This is not just a change for the new season though. During the 2021-22 season the Canes allowed the fewest goals (202), while the Flames allowed the fewest in the Western Conference with 206.

Injury Report: Forward Ondrej Kase Remains out after returning to Raleigh last Friday to be evaluated for a possible concussion.

On The Other Side: Much like Carolina, Calgary entered their Thursday matchup a perfect 3-0. Taking on Buffalo, the Flames also allowed six, giving up four consecutive after getting the game’s first goal early. Netminder Jacob Markstrom was removed after the first period of play, letting three of the first 12 shots by him. Make no mistake though, the start to the season as a whole has been successful for Calgary, including victories over both Edmonton and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche. New forward Nazem Kadri leads the way with five points in four games.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

What Are We Wearing?: The Canes will be wearing their white uniforms tonight.

AFTER TODAY:

The Canes are scheduled to travel to Vancouver post-game. They are slated to be off Sunday before taking on the Canucks Monday night at 10:30 pm EST.
