Prep roundup: Roy volleyball wins its opener; Bonneville and Layton soccer players score hat tricks | News, Sports, Jobs


ROY — Roy High volleyball started the 2022 season with a three-set sweep over visiting East High on Tuesday night.

The Royals (1-0) took the match by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-23. Kjerstin Waite led Roy with 11 kills and four service aces. Sierra Jones added eight kills.

NORTHRIDGE 3, LAYTON 0

LAYTON — Chloe Williams hit 10 service aces as Northridge (1-1) beat crosstown rival Layton (0-1) in straight sets: 25-6, 25-16, 25-16.

SYRACUSE 3, SUMMIT ACADEMY 0

BLUFFDALE — Brilyn Jensen had 20 assists to lead Syracuse past Summit Academy in three sets: 25-7, 25-10, 25-15.

Kallie Johansen led the Titans (1-0) with nine kills and Mikelle Neilson had seven kills with four service aces. Kambree Rodriguez picked up 10 digs.

BOUNTIFUL 3, BRIGHTON 0

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Bountiful coasted past Brighton: 25-12, 25-18, 25-14. Evalyn Chism spread out 31 assists for the Redhawks (2-0) and Taylor Harvey led the team with 13 kills.

Jordyn Harvey added 10 kills with eight digs and Elle Burleson had nine kills with two aces.

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville scored twice in the first four minutes to stay undefeated with a win over Mountain Crest.

Sadie Beardall netted a hat trick for Bonneville (5-0), all off Summer Diamond assists.

ROY — After 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Roy outshot West 4-3 on penalty kicks to open regional play with a win.

Macy Reed, Essence Burrus, Jaelyn Barba and Allee Leishman converted penalty kicks for the Royals (2-3, 1-0 Region 2).

LAYTON 5, FREMONT 0

PLAIN CITY — Jersee Clapier scored a hat trick to lead Layton to a region-opening win at Fremont (0-5, 0-1 Region 1). Calli Holje had a hat trick for assists, providing for two of Clapier’s goals and assisting Kristen Moss’s goal.

Rachel Hansen scored for Layton (2-3, 1-0), assisted by Reese Robinson. Burklie Burton and Avery Bott split the shutout in goal.

MORGAN 3, BEAR RIVER 2

MORGAN — Lacie Poll scored on a Kaydence Wardell assist in the second half to break a 2-2 halftime tie and send Morgan past Bear River.

Ashlyn Noss and Jayda Jones netted for Morgan (4-1) before the break.

Bear River (3-2) did not report stats.

BOYS GOLF

PLEASANT VIEW — David Liechty of Layton High shot 4-under-par 67 to win Monday’s Region 1 match by one shot at The Barn. It was Liechty’s third straight round in the 60s to start the season.

Fremont High took first place as a team with a score of 277 and Farmington was one shot back with a 278. Layton shot 290 for third and Davis posted a 293. Weber shot 296, Syracuse placed sixth with a 310 and Clearfield tallied 325.

Farmington’s Luke Kelly and Fremont’s Karson Tesch tied for second with a 68. Cole Taylor (Farmington) and Fremont teammates Chase Burton and Emmett Jones each shot 69 for fourth.

Ben Ackley from Farmington and Cole Summerhays from Weber tied for seventh place, each shooting 70. One stroke back, tied for ninth with a 71, were Peyton Love (Davis), Jack Summerhays (Farmington), Luke Dalebout (Fremont), Spencer Poll (Layton) and Cohen Stanger (Weber).

INTERMOUNTAIN CHRISTIAN 25, ST. JOSEPH 3

OGDEN—St. Joseph gave up 13 runs in the second inning in a season-opening loss to Intermountain Christian.

St. Joseph (0-1) scored two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth.
