Layton Christian Academy boys soccer players celebrate after beating the Real Salt Lake Academy charter high school 4-0 in the 3A state championship on May 11, 2022, at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Layton Christian Academy’s boys basketball won the 3A state championship this past February and days later, the school announced it would move the basketball team up to the 4A classification.

LCA’s boys soccer team won the 3A state championship in May. Next year, it will also play in 4A.

The UHSAA board of trustees approved the team’s move up from 3A to 4A, where the Eagles will play as an unattached team, like the boys basketball team, LCA director Greg Miller said Monday.

Unattached is different than independent. An unattached team means the team isn’t playing in a region but is eligible for the postseason, whereas an independent program isn’t eligible for the postseason.

LCA won the 2A boys soccer state championship in 2017 and 2019 and routinely wins or competes for whichever region championship it’s playing for. It won the 3A Region 13 title this past spring in its first season in 3A.

The 4A classification consists of 13 schools and just two regions: the northern Cache Valley/Bear River region and the southern St. George region.

Real Salt Lake Academy, a charter school housed in RSL’s training campus in Herriman, will also move up from the 3A classification to 6A.

LCA defeated RSL Academy for the 3A state title back in May.
