Porsche Taycan onboard charger upgrade almost halves charging times

  • by

Porsche has announced an onboard charger upgrade for the Taycan. Owners of the vehicle can now have an AC 19.2 kW charger fitted to their EV, replacing the existing model. Two versions of the charger will be available, the Performance Battery and the Performance Battery Plus. The standard part enables you to charge the battery fully in 4.8 hours, almost half of the 9.5 hours which the older make required.

The Pro edition reduces the charge time from 10.5 to 5.3 hours. For context, the Taycan ranges around 304 miles (~489 km) on a single charge. Taycans built in 2020 will receive the extra benefit of support for Plug and Charge in connection with a My Porsche account. This feature became standard in 2021, which is why later models are unaffected. The new Porsche onboard charger is fitted near the front trunk, with the part costing US$1,850.15 and the procedure requiring around 12 hours of labor.

The higher capacity onboard charger will also be an option in the configurator for new purchases. Plus, customers can buy an accompanying 19.2 kW Wall Charger Connect which features a 5-inch touchscreen and support for Wi-Fi connection. It is worth noting that this must be connected to a 100 A circuit. You can purchase the wall charger from the Porsche store for US$1,586.
