Pleasington Golf club thanked by Hospice for £10,000 donation

Members of Pleasington Golf Club have presented a check for £10,000 to their local hospice.

Pleasington Golf Club raised £9,851 through a series of events and rounded the figure to £10,000 after further donations from club members.

Captain John Covill, managing director of Blackburn Chemical, and Lady Captain Christine Darling, planned a range of events to raise funds for the hospice including their Christmas Fayre; the Captains’ Charity Day with auctioned prizes; Charity Day competitions, and a Nearest the Pin on Captains’ Day.

On Jumper Day, people were fined for wearing a jumper – or not wearing a jumper, or wearing the wrong jumper.

Members were issued jumper-related fines and asked to make a donation in order to support the hospice.

Christine, a Pleasington Golf Club member for more than 23 years, said: “We thought about it carefully.

“We wanted to choose a charity where we knew the funds raised would go directly back to the hospice. Both John and I knew the hospice was a worthy cause.

“People didn’t mind, they knew where the money was going. We are all so pleased to raise such a fantastic amount, especially in these times.

“It is getting harder and harder to raise funds in this climate and we are incredibly proud of everyone for supporting the charity this year.”

John Covill and Christine Darling presented the check to marketing co-ordinator, Gabrielle Williamson, after choosing East Lancashire Hospice as their chosen charity for their year as Captains of the club.

Gabrielle Williamson said: “The amount raised is unbelievable and will help make a real difference to patient care.

“We need £4 million per year to care for patients at the end of life, and those with life limiting illnesses, supporting them in their home as well as at East Lancashire Hospice that they may make the most of life.

“Our sincere thanks go to both John and Christine for choosing East Lancashire Hospice as their chosen charity.”
