The Arizona Diamondbacks continue their road trip against the Atlanta Braves. Wednesday’s game is set for 4:20 pm and is scheduled to be shown by new outlets.

Wednesday’s Diamondbacks-Braves pitching matchup

Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (5-5, 4.98) vs. Braves RHP Charlie Morton (10-6, 3.20).

Nelson allowed nine hits against the Blue Jays in his last start, but managed to avoid significant damage with just two of those hits being for extra bases. His final line included just two runs (one earned) in 5 2/3 innings. It was also Nelson’s second straight start without a walk, although he only struck out three. … Despite the mixed bag, the outing was an improvement for Nelson, who had allowed seven runs in three innings in his final start before the All-Star break. He has now allowed one run or fewer in three of his last four starts. … At age 39, Morton has turned back the clock this year, lowering his ERA by a full run from last season. In recent years, Morton has mostly ditched his sinker, relying instead on his four-seam fastball and curveball. The latter is one of the best pitches in baseball, with a 40.5% whiff rate. Morton has used it 45% of the time this season. … In his first start out of the break, Morton went seven scoreless against the White Sox.

Game of the year? Diamondbacks snap skid with wild win over Braves

The Braves, the clear-cut best team in the National League, dropped two of three to the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, their first series loss since they somehow dropped two of three to the Oakland Athletics way back in late May. They took two of three from the Diamondbacks in the series immediately after Oakland, and since June 3 they are 28-7. They have a plus-148 run differential, best in the NL. They are a club mostly powered by their offense. They are a league-best 5.6 runs per game. RF Ronald Acuna Jr. is having an MVP-caliber season, hitting .333/.414/.593 with 23 homers and 43 steals. 1B Matt Olson had 30 homers and a .933 OPS. C Sean Murphy has a .295/.389/.577 line with 17 homers. RHPs Spencer Strider, Bryce Elder and Charlie Morton have thrown well atop the Braves rotation, although Strider has taken a small step back from last year, seeing his ERA swell by a run (2.67 to 3.66) despite averaging more strikeouts and fewer walks. RHP Raisel Iglesias has a 3.76 ERA but has converted 16 of 18 save chances.
