The Detroit Pistons have fired assistant general manager Rob Murphy, the Detroit Free Press has learned.
The team announced his firing in a statement to the Free Press. It comes seven months after the Pistons placed Murphy on leave following an investigation into an allegation that he engaged in workplace misconduct with a female former employee.
In a statement to the Free Press late Wednesday, the basketball organization said:
“Rob Murphy no longer works for the Detroit Pistons or Motor City Cruise, in any capacity. Mr. Murphy was recently terminated for violation of company policy and the terms of his employment agreement. The facts that gave rise to his termination surfaced during a review , assisted by a national law firm, of allegations made by a former employee.”
According to the Pistons, after the allegations were made, Murphy “did not return to the workplace prior to his termination.”

Murphy, 50, was promoted to assistant general manager last offseason after spending the 2021-22 season as the president of the Pistons’ G League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise.
A former basketball and football star at Detroit Mumford, Murphy coached at Detroit Crockett and Central High Schools before becoming an assistant coach in college, first at Kent State and then at Syracuse, the same school that Troy Weaver, now the Pistons general manager, was an assistant under Jim Boeheim.
Murphy was the head coach at Eastern Michigan for 10 seasons (2011-21) and reached three postseasons.
