Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Rodolfo Castro lost his phone while sliding into third base in Tuesday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Hold the phone. What?
Yes, you read that correctly. Castro’s iPhone slid out of his back pocket and landed in the dirt as he reached third base. Third base umpire Adam Hamari noticed the phone sitting by the bag and pointed it out to Castro.

“I don’t think there’s any professional ballplayer that would ever go out there with any intentions of taking a cellphone,” Castro told reporters through an interpreter. “It’s horrible it happened to me. Obviously, it was very unintentional.”
Castro was in violation of Major League Baseball’s regulation prohibiting electronic devices on the field or in the dugout, except for league-approved iPads. MLB is looking into the incident.
Castro, who was recalled by the Pirates from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, went 0-for-3 with a walk in Pittsburgh’s 6-4 loss to Arizona on Tuesday. The 23-year-old batted .197 in 21 games with the Pirates before his demotion in early June.
