Peterson’s Goal Lifts Rainbow Wahine Past Nicholls

WAIPAHU, O’ahu – The Hawai’i women’s soccer team capped off a perfect weekend at the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff with a 1-0 win over Nicholls State on Sunday at the Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-1) dominated possession and outshot the Colonels 21-2 but were able to score just once on a Krista Peterson goal in the 16th minute.

The ‘Bows came out aggressive once again, creating numerous chances early on before Peterson cashed one in off of assists from Kelsey Sumida and Mia Foster. Peterson found the back of the net for her second goal of the year after Sumida took a pass from Foster in the middle and dished out a cross to the top of the box.

UH continued to threaten throughout the first half but just missed opportunities to extend the lead, keeping the lead at 1-0 going into halftime. Sumida had a shot attempt that went wide off a feed Eliza Ammendoliabefore Ammendolia had an attempt sail just over the crossbar following a cross by Amber Gilbertamong several other good scoring chances.

Hawai’i had more chances in the second half but were unable to find the net for a second time. Foster took one of her five shots off a corner kick in the 70th minute, sending a header just wide, while Sumida had back-to-back shot attempts in space in the 79th minute with one getting blocked and another going high.

Foster and Sumida tied for the team lead with five shots apiece while Ammendolia and Peterson each attempted three shots. Gilbert finished with two shot attempts while Kylie McNamara, Carley Park and Fabiola Zamora all ended with one.

Head coach Michele Nagamine mixed and matched the lineup all day, as 22 players saw action with all playing at least 13 minutes.

The Rainbow Wahine head back on the road to take on Portland next Sunday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m
