PC Basketball Takes Down Merrimack

The Providence College men’s basketball team defeated Merrimack College, 71-57, on Wednesday at the Amica Mutual Pavilion.

The Friars are now 4-2 this season. Redshirt-Senior Ed Croswell led the way for the Friars with 17 points and seven rebounds. Devin Carter recorded his first double-double as a Friar with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

“Happy to get the win after a few losses over the weekend,” Head Coach Ed Cooley said. “Devin Carter and Ed Croswell gave us some good effort. We will keep working to get better”


FIRST HALF:

– Noah Locke hit a floater from the inside of the free-throw line to start the scoring for the Friars.
– The Friars held a 6-3 lead at the first half timeout.
– Merrimack’s Mykel Derring scored the first five points for the Warriors.
– Bryce Hopkins ended the Friars three minute scoring drought with a coast-to-coast layup after a defensive rebound. Ensuring the Friars’ lead at the second half timeout, 12-7.
– Locke buried the first Friars’ three-pointer of the night from the left corner from a penetrating Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, NJ).
– At the 8:28 mark, Pierre stole the ball and found Croswell for the slam dunk. PC led 21-10.
– With 3:29 to go in the half, Hopkins ended a 7-0 Merrimack run with a turnaround jump shot. PC held the lead, 27-21.
– With 1:44 remaining, Croswell hit a layup to give Providence their largest lead of the half at 35-21.
– Providence led 37-26 at the half.
– Providence shot 16-31 (51.6%) from the field, 1-6 (16.7%) from three and 4-6 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
– Merrimack shot 8-19 (42.1%) from the field, 3-6 (50.0%) from three and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free throw line.

SECOND HALF:

– Locke scored the opening two buckets of the half for the Friars.
– After the first media timeout of the half, Pierre found Carter for an alley-oop dunk.
– At the 11:31 mark, Providence capitalized in transition off a Pierre steal, turning into a dunk for Clifton Moore (Ambler Pa.).
– At the third half timeout Providence would lead, 55-48.
– The Friars’ went on a 9-3 run fueled by layups from Croswell and Hopkins capped off by a Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) three-pointer to give the Friars a 64-51 lead heading into the final half timeout.
– Providence sealed the win with a Carter layup giving the largest lead of the game of 17 points with 14 remaining.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Providence finished 29-60 (48.3%) from the field, 3-11 (27.3%) from three and 10-14 (71.4%) from the free throw line.
Merrimack finished 20-52 (38.5%) from the field, 10-23 (43.5%) from three and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free throw line.
Four players finished in double figures for the Friars, in Croswell (17), Locke (14), Hopkins (13) and Carter (12).
Providence outrebounded the Warriors, 43-21.
The Friars dominated the paint, outshooting Merrimack, 50-18.
Bynum led the way with a game-high six assists.
Carter snagged a game-high 10 boards.
Ziggy Reid led the way for the Warriors with 21 points.

The Friars will take on Columbia University on Saturday, Nov. 26 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, RI Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm on FS2.
Providence holds a 3-0 all-time series lead against Columbia. In their last matchup, the Friars earned an 81-55 triumph on Nov. 28, 2006.
