Paul Maddy has made it three-in-a-row Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union County Open titles.

The event, supported by Titleist and FootJoy, featured 58 amateur and professional players in what was its 50th year.

There were 13 pros in the field, with the rest looking to become the first amateur to win the accolade since James Reeson in 2015.

But Maddy, whose home club is Gog Magog, started the first round on the 10th hole, and went through the back nine with six threes for an outward score of 31. He made birdies at six, seven and eight to complete the round with 63 , five shots clear of Brampton Park’s Adam Pike.

The next four places on the leaderboard were filled by Ed Dimambro, Alex Kephart and Paul Collington, all of Gog Magog, and St Neots’ Andy Grimwood, all with 70.

Maddy showed no sign of relinquishing his grip on the trophy in the afternoon either, going out in 32 – with birdies on the third, seventh and eighth holes – to take a six-shot lead over Dimambro, who had gone out in 31 to edge in front of Pike.

The scoring continued for Maddy on the back nine as he shot 33 strokes for a 65, and a winning total of 128, the lowest score in the history of the championship, as he completed a hat-trick of successes.

Grimwood came through the field in the last nine, with seven birdies in a round of 67 to finish with 137, beating Dimambro on a card play-off countback over the last nine holes.

It meant Grimwood won the top amateur prize.

Girton’s Peter Dean edged out St Neots’ Colin Mynott in a close run thing in the John Durman Handicap Trophy.

A total of gross 144, nett 138, saw Dean win a first county title on a card play-off from Mynott, who had gross 152, nett 138 after a first round nett 65.

Collington won the best under-21 scratch prize with 146, and Jeremy Baldwin was the best senior with 152.

Next year’s County Open will be at Ramsey Golf Club on August 20.
