Parise, Islanders rally to defeat Blue Jackets in OT

  • by

Zach Parise scored 39 seconds into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 4-3 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Saturday.

Parise scored blocker side on Joonas Korpisalo off a pass from Jean-Gabriel Pageau on a 2-on-1.

The Blue Jackets had started overtime with forwards Johnny Gaudreau, Boone Jenner and Patrick Lainewho held Parise in the neutral zone before letting up after the Islanders gained control of the puck.

“We all saw that those three guys went out, and they’re dangerous offensively, but you know when there’s going to be a turnover, they might be a little slower getting back,” Parise said. “So when that puck did turnover, we were ready to jump on the offense. But again, you have to make sure you’re marking up defensively.

“I think [Laine] when he got the (delayed) penalty, he just kind of gave up on the play it felt like, so I was able to get a step on him, and [Pageau] did a really good job of showing the shot. I think he froze the goalie really well, and then I was able to get one in pretty much into an open net.”

Brock Nelson scored twice, Scott Mayfield had a goal and an assist, and Sebastian Aho had two assists for the Islanders (10-6-0), who have won three of four. Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves.

“Everybody has the belief here that we can come back in any situation, and tonight was no exception,” Nelson said. “We stuck with it.”

Marcus Björk scored in his NHL debut, Emil Bemstrom had a goal and an assist, and Gustav Nyquist and Jake Bean each had two assists for the Blue Jackets (4-9-1), who have lost six of seven (1-5-1). Korpisalo made 41 saves.

“It’s a close game,” Columbus coach Brad Larsen said. “We got it into overtime there and we got caught.”

Cole Sillinger scored his first of the season to give Columbus a 1-0 lead at 3:09 of the second period. He got his own rebound in front and shot past the right pad of Sorokin on the power play.

Nelson tied it 1-1 at 7:27, redirecting a slap pass from Mayfield.

Bemstrom restored the Blue Jackets to a 2-1 lead at 10:15. Nyquist redirected a stretch pass from Bean to Bemstrom, who split the defense and shot high blocker side for this first of the season.

Nelson tied it again 2-2 with 45 seconds left in the period, scoring from low in the right circle off a rebound of Aho’s initial shot.

“That’s frustrating,” Sillinger said. “I mean, we had a lot of guys come into the lineup and step up and have that extra opportunity, but it’s a matter of playing for 60 minutes. We had some momentum there at the end of the second period, but we could have been sharper getting out of the zone.”

Bjork, who was called up from Cleveland of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis on Friday, scored with a slap shot from the top of the right circle to put Columbus back in front 3-2 at 9:38 of the third period.

“I didn’t see it at first, but it went in so it was a nice feeling,” said the 24-year-old defenseman, who signed with the Blue Jackets as an undrafted free agent on May 24.

Mayfield tied it 3-3 at 12:51 with a backhand in the slot.

“Those extra points you accumulate can be the difference between you being in a good spot in the standings and not being in a good spot,” Islanders coach Lane Lambert said.

NOTES: Nelson had 10 shots on goal, all in the first two periods. … Jake Christiansen made his season debut and Gavin Bayreuther played in his second game for the Blue Jackets. The defensemen were also recalled from Cleveland after Zach Werenski (torn labrum), Nick Blankenburg (ankle) and Erik Gudbranson (upper body) were injured in a 5-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.
