Par for the Course | Roosevelt’s Maddie Kost qualifies for Optimist International

The Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur tees off for the event’s 17th season on July 24 at Windmill Lakes and July 25 at Sunny Hill Golf Course.

The event welcomes youth golfers in three divisions for both boys and girls: age 12 and under, 13-15 and 16-19.

Junior golfers receive $10 in gift certificates ($5 at each course) on the final day of competition. Gift certificates for both Sunny Hill and Windmill Lakes are presented to the champions.

This season, the Fairways at Twin Lakes and Birdie Shack are the title sponsors for the Matt Mishler Junior Amateur and the Portage County Kids Amateur.

The registration deadline for the event that often provides a sneak peek into the best golfers of the upcoming high school and middle school golf seasons is July 20.

Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation director Danielle Monas (Nicholson) welcomed members of the Southeast girls golf team to Windmill Lakes as part of the Clubs For Kids program, providing sets of golf clubs to youth golfers to help grow the game.

Dan Dauk, PGA Professional at Windmill Lakes Golf Club, spent two hours with the Pirates, giving the girls putting and hitting lessons and helping them navigate their new golf clubs for their best choices on the golf course.

Cindy Fesemyer, coach of the Pirates, said that it was a wonderful afternoon for the girls.

“They had the best time and are so proud of the new clubs,” said Fesemyer, who also expressed her appreciation to the Northern Ohio PGA Foundation.
