Pajaro Valley boys soccer knocks off host Soquel

Senior midfielder Johan Vazquez scored twice, and Pajaro Valley High’s boys soccer team knocked off host Soquel 2-1 in nonleague action Monday.

Soquel scored in the seventh minute. Vazquez knotted the score at 1-all in the 62nd minute and provided the game winner in the 78th minute.

Ignacio Aguado and Isaac Rojas were credited with assists for the Grizzlies.

Pajaro Valley keeper Angel Rodriguez made two saves.

Pajaro Valley (4-0-2) hosts crosstown rival Watsonville on Friday at 3 p.m

Harbor 0, at King City 0: Goalie Damian Escalante made three saves for the unbeaten Pirates in their scoreless nonleague draw Monday.

Harbor was unsuccessful on two early chances and another one late, all from the run of play. “Unlucky not to finish one,” Pirates coach Michael Vahradian said.

The Pirates (5-0-1) host San Lorenzo Valley in their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League opener on Jan. 3 at 7 p.m

Girls soccer

At Harbor 3, Pacific Collegiate 1: Freshman Reese Weiss scored twice and sophomore Ava Bibighaus also scored in the Pirates’ nonleague win Monday.

“Great to see Ava back on the field, as she has been injured until tonight, our young players stepped up today.” Pirates coach Wes Bare said.

Weiss finished off a shot from junior Sonja Hulphers that was blocked by PCS sophomore goalie Claire Protti in the 16th minute.

Weiss created the second goal with a cross to Bibighaus in the 27th minute.

The Pumas cut the lead in half in the 32nd minute, when senior Rosalyn Bourdow lofted a ball over the head of the Pirates’ goalkeeper.

Hulphers slotted a pass to Weiss in the 50th minute to cap scoring.

PCS (2-2-0) faces Santa Cruz (5-1-0) on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and Harbor (6-3-0) closes its nonleague slate with a home game against Fremont (4-3-1) on Thursday at 3 pm

Boys basketball

At Harbor 65, Cristo Rey 25: Ivan Martinez had 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in the Pirates’ nonleague win Monday.

Matt Munro had 11 points and six steals for Harbor. Nash Campbell had nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals, and Brady Fry had eight points, five assists, three rebounds, and three steals.

Harbor (7-4) hosts St. Francis on Friday at 7 pm

At Branham 65, Scotts Valley 40: Sophomore Will Shilling scored 15 points and Taylor Knox scored eight points in the Falcons’ nonleague loss on Monday to the host Bruins, the No. 18 teams in maxpreps.com’s Central Coast Section rankings.

The teams were deadlocked at 30-all at the half, but the Bruins (10-1) exploded for 31 points in the third quarter and rolled to the win.

Falcons coach Gabe Gonzales praised the efforts of Kit DeForest, Chase Welle and Zach Shilling for their fight in the paint against a bigger team.

It was the Falcons’ third straight loss.

“Even though this has been a rough patch, I believe we are getting better and are still continuing to find our stride,” Gonzales said. “At times we have played great, but have yet to play our best basketball. I have a feeling we will peak just in time for (the league) season.”

The Falcons play at Watsonville on Tuesday at 7 p.m
