ELMONT, N.Y. — Dmitry Orlov scored with 33 seconds left in overtime, and the Washington Capitals rallied with four straight goals for a 4-3 win against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Monday.
Orlov won it with a backhand-to-forehand deke after eluding Mathew Barzal near the left face-off circle.
TJ Oshie had a goal and an assist, and Tom Wilson scored his first goal of the season for Washington (24-16-6), which overcame a three-goal deficit for the first time this season. Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves.
“We got down 3-0, and you could kind of see our attitude [became] ‘Enough is enough,'” Capitals goalie Darcy Kuemper said. “We started taking it to them physically. We started to turn the tide, and that is a huge comeback win we can build off of.”

Sebastian Aho, Matt Martin and Hudson Fasching scored for New York (23-18-4), which has lost five of six (1-3-2). Ilya Sorokin made 31 saves.
“The initial thoughts right now [are] you’re disappointed in how it finished,” Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson said. “We got off to a good start, and anytime you [have] a three-goal lead… we got one point, but you [have] to find a way to close that out and get both points. Unfortunately, we didn’t.”

Aho gave New York a 1-0 lead at 4:24 of the first period with a shot from the left point after a feed. Josh Bailey.
Martin made it 2-0 at 13:19. Alexander Romanov took a wrist shot from the point that was deflected by Cal Clutterbuck and Martin before going past Kuemper.
Fasching gave New York a 3-0 lead at 3:51 of the second period with a wrist shot from the right circle that hit Kuemper’s stick and got past him to the far side.
“It’s no different than when we have a push,” Islanders captain Anders Lee. “It’s expected. Couple of plays, they got kind of a decent bounce on their first one, but we expected those pushes. When we settled into our structure, they were just able to pop a couple.
“We’ve got to figure out a way to close it out. We’ve got to regroup here. We’ve got a big week in front of us, a couple of games in a couple of days, a back to back. This one’s going to sting.”

Garnet Hathaway cut it to 3-1 at 10:01. Sorokin made a save on Alex Ovechkin‘s wrist shot from the left circle off a face-off, but Hathaway scored on the rebound while falling to the ice.
Wilson made it 3-2 at 13:08 during a 4-on-4 situation with a wrist shot from point-blank range after a feed from Nicklas Backstrom.
It was Wilson’s first goal in his fourth game after missing the first 42 following offseason knee surgery.
Oshie tied it 3-3 at 5:54 of the third period on a redirection Erik Gustafsson‘s wrist shot.
“Really good job. We fought back,” Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said. “Guys never quit.”
NOTES: It was Orlov’s fifth career overtime goal. … Washington’s past three comebacks from three goals have come against the Islanders (Jan. 28, 2021, and Jan. 18, 2020). … Capitals forward Nic Dowd left the game in the first because of a lower-body injury.
