Oettinger makes 27 saves for Stars in win against Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS — Jake Oettinger made 27 saves for the Dallas Stars in a 2-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Monday.

Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson scored for the Stars (19-8-6), who went 3-1-1 on a five-game road trip.

“Tough road trip. We kept it pretty peanut butter and jelly, pretty simple,” Dallas captain Jamie Benn said. “Their goalie was really good. It was our first time seeing him. And then Jake is Jake; he comes to play every night and battles for us and gives us a chance.

“I thought we had a lot of good looks on them. They had hit a few posts, or more than a few, probably.”

Kent Johnson scored, and Daniel Tarasov made 32 saves for the Blue Jackets (10-19-2), who have been outscored 14-4 in four straight losses and visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

“There’s a lot of guys here who can score goals,” the Columbus forward Gustav Nyquist said. “We’ve got to bear down when we get those opportunities.”

Johnston gave Dallas a 1-0 lead 55 seconds into the second period when he scored on a backhand rebound off a Ryan Suter shot for his eighth goal.

“I just tried to get open and the puck just popped to me, and I just tried to put it in,” Johnston said. “We played a lot of good teams on this road trip, so I think we did a really good job playing in some tough buildings and getting points.”

The Blue Jackets almost tied it 1-1 1:00 into the third period during a power play when a shot by Marcus Björk was tipped by Jack Roslovic off the right post.

Nyquist hit the left post at 17:23.

“I gave it a little early celebration there,” Nyquist said. “I thought it was in.”

Robertson ended a seven-game drought, scoring his 24th goal into an empty net at 18:53 to make it 2-0.

Johnson scored with 15 seconds left for the 2-1 final. The rookie forward has seven goals.

“I thought the first period was a little loose,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “I thought in the second and third we tightened up defensively. We just couldn’t extend the lead to really put them in a hole. Got to give them credit for hanging around until the end.

“Every time you win a game like this, you learn some things and guys get put in situations. I liked our patience. … We didn’t extend ourselves looking for the second goal.”

Tarasov made his third straight start with Joonas Korpisalo out with a lower-body injury the past five games and Elvis Merzlikins struggling (4-8-0, 4.68 goals-against average, .864 save percentage).

“Most goalies want to get into a rhythm if they can,” Blue Jackets coach Brad Larsen said. “That was a big reason I wanted to see him. He looked very comfortable tonight. Every time you see him there, he does look more comfortable.”

Tarasov made 26 saves in the first two periods.

“I’m trying to do my best to help with the guys,” he said. “Sometimes it doesn’t happen, so I just keep working on it.”
