Oct. 7: NHL Preseason Roundup

Bryan Rust also scored twice, Jake Guentzel had a goal and two assists and Evgeni Malkin had three assists for the Penguins, who finished the preseason 3-3-0. Tristan Jarry made 22 saves.

Vinnie Hinostroza scored for the Sabers in their preseason finale (4-2-0). Eric Comrie made 20 saves.

Guentzel gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead at 7:04 of the first period after Crosby stole the puck behind the net.

Crosby redirected a feed from Guentzel at 9:40 to make it 2-0.

Rust extended the Penguins lead to 3-0 when he tipped a pass from Ty Smith at 13:49.

Hinostroza cut it to 3-1 with a short-handed goal at 5:13 of the second period.

Crosby restored the three-goal lead with a power-play goal at 10:11 to make it 4-1, and Smith gave the Penguins a 5-1 lead at 11:14.

Danton Heinen made it 6-1 at 5:30 of the third period, and Rust scored with 32 seconds left for the 7-1 final.

Red Wings 4, Maple Leafs 2: Tyler Bertuzzi had two goals for the Detroit Red Wings in a 4-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Joe Veleno scored, Dylan Larkin had an assist and Alex Nedeljkovic made 21 saves for the Red Wings.

Rasmus Sandin scored in his preseason debut, Nicholas Robertson had his fifth assist of the preseason, and Ilya Samsonov made 23 saves for the Maple Leafs.

Nick Abruzzese scored from the right face-off circle to give Toronto a 1-0 lead 1:55 into the first period.

Sandin extended it to 2-0 at 6:05 with a shot from the right point, but Bertuzzi cut it to 2-1 at 17:48 with a wrist shot from the left circle.

Elmer Soderblom tied it 2-2 at 10:32 of the second period when he cut to the front of the net and scored on a backhand.

Veleno scored through a screen at 8:13 of the third period to give Detroit a 3-2 lead, and Bertuzzi scored an empty-net goal with 54 seconds remaining for the 4-2 final.

Jets 5, Flames 3: Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice for the Winnipeg Jets in a 5-3 win against the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

Each of Dubois’ goals were scored in the first period before he left the game because of a lower-body injury.

Kyle Connor had a goal and two assists, and Dylan DeMelo and Josh Morrissey each had two assists for the Jets in their preseason finale (4-1-1). Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves.

Nazem Kadri scored his first goal with the Flames, who finished the preseason 4-4-0. Jacob Markstrom made 11 saves.

Dubois gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead at 4:18 of the first, and Nikolaj Ehlers made it 2-0 at 8:29.

Tyler Toffoli cut it to 2-1 at 15:05, but Dubois gave the Jets a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal at 17:17.

Blake Coleman scored at 5:00 of the second period to cut it to 3-2, but Connor restored Winnipeg’s two-goal lead at 9:27 to make it 4-2.

Mark Scheifele gave the Jets a 5-2 lead when he scored short-handed at 16:52.

Kadri, who signed a seven-year contract with Calgary ($7 million average annual value) on Aug. 18, scored at 16:23 for the 5-3 final.

Oilers 5, Kraken 3: Leon Draisaitl had a goal and three assists to help the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-3 win against the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Evander Kane scored the go-ahead goal with 1:59 remaining in the third period and Connor McDavid scored into an empty net with 35 seconds left for the 5-3 final.

McDavid, Kane and Tyson Barry each had a goal and an assist for Edmonton, which finished the preseason 5-3-0. Jack Campbell made 28 saves.

Philipp Grubauer made 34 saves for Seattle, which lost its last two preseason games after winning the first four.

Daniel Sprong tucked in a rebound at 12:50 of the first period to give the Kraken a 1-0 lead, but Barrie tied it with a power-play goal at 19:27.

Matty Beniers scored on a rebound of Andrey Burakovsky‘s shot off the post at 11:11 of the second period to give Seattle a 2-1 lead.

Jesse Puljujarvi tied it 2-2 when he scored from in front after a pass from McDavid at 4:56 of the third period.

Draisaitl scored when he intercepted a clearing attempt by Grubauer at 15:27 to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead, but Jared McCann tied it 3-3 with a power-play goal at 17:42.

Canucks 4, Coyotes 0: Thatcher Demko made seven saves and the Vancouver Canucks shut out the Arizona Coyotes 4-0 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

Bo Horvat scored his first goal of the preseason, Elias Pettersson had a goal, and Andrei Kuzmenko had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who finished the preseason 2-3-2.

Karel Vejmelka made 28 saves for the Coyotes, who have lost their first six preseason games (0-5-1).

Horvat gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead at 3:29 of the first period on the power play with a redirect in the slot.

Dakota Joshua extended it to 2-0 at 6:14 after Vejmelka gave the puck away to Curtis Lazar behind the net and he fed Joshua in front.

Pettersson scored his third goal of the preseason, a wrist shot from the left face-off circle, to make it 3-0 at 8:58 of the second period.

Kuzmenko padded it to 4-0 at 19:54, taking a stretch pass from Tanner Pearson after he exited the penalty box and scored on a breakaway for his third goal of the preseason.
