Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 mobile crash and burn in Geekbench debut; bad drivers or low wattage likely to blame

Nvidia announced its entire Ada Lovelace laptop lineup at CES 2023. Everything from the top-of-the-line GeForce RTX 4090 to the RTX 4050 was announced. The company also made lofty claims about its performance, stating that the GeForce RTX 4070 can perform on par with the RTX 3080 Ti with a third of the power consumption. That claim remains to be verified; meanwhile, its siblings, the GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 have been tested on Geekbench, shortly after the latter was found to be up to 20% faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 in one 3DMark test.

Both graphics cards have more or less identical specs with 8 GB of VRAM each. However, the CUDA core count on the GeForce RTX 4070 is 4,608 (36 SMs), whereas the RTX 4060 lowers that to 3,072 (24 SMs). However, their Geekbench scores (via ITHome/Videocardz) are quite close despite the difference in hardware. The GeForce RTX 4070 scores 114,074 points in the OpenCL benchmark, and the GeForce RTX 4060 stands at 101,850 points.

These numbers show just a 12% performance delta between the two. That figure should be a lot higher, given the GeForce RTX 4070 uses an AD106 GPU and the GeForce RTX 4060 uses an AD107. Furthermore, the GeForce RTX 4070 lags behind the last-gen RTX 3070 Ti and the RTX 4060 behind its non-Ti counterpart. Then again, the test is run on a laptop from a relatively unknown Chinese OEM Thunderobot and the hardware might not be running optimally due to hamstrung drivers or the GPUs not getting enough power.
