After all the delays, the free-to-play shooter Gundam Evolution is finally here and streamers are already having a field day with mispronouncing mobile suit names.
Don’t get me wrong, I am loving all the enthusiasm online for the game and the high-pitched cries that certain mobile suits are already “broken”, but the way people are mispronouncing mobile suit names is setting me off.
Now I get it, this game is not really meant for fans of Gundam. One of the fascinating things about the release of Gundam Evolution is that it is acting as a gateway for all the host anime it features.
That is genuinely a great thing and the game itself, as free-to-play shooters go, is pretty decent. It’s definitely not a Gundam game or even a mecha game, but it roughly works in and of itself.
Admittedly, the mobile suits do look and act like people in a robot suit, but the functional foundation of the game is pretty standardized by this point, so I get it.
Hearing people get almost all mobile suit names wrong is driving me a bit crazy though.
That aside, one of the cooler things I saw at the game’s launch was a very nice “countdown” trailer (shown below) that tries to link up the various mobile suits with their original host anime (and games, in the case of the Pale Rider).
I know that the team behind this are thoroughly versed in all things Gundam, as they made that clear in my recent interview with them. I just hope that for all these new players Gundam Evolution will eventually catch up with the rest of us.
Gundam Evolution is now available on PC via Steam, with the console releases planned for this December.
