No. 14 Men’s Soccer Opens 2022 Season at Home Against VCU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –
No. 14 Marshall University men’s soccer opens the 2022 season against the VCU Rams at Hoops Family Field on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

TICKETS FOR THURSDAY’S MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SOCCER DOUBLEHEADER
Hoops Family Field will be cleared at the conclusion of the women’s soccer match in preparation for the men’s match. If you have a women’s soccer ticket and want to attend the men’s match, you can purchase a general admission ticket to the men’s contest for $5 while supplies last. Both events will require a separate ticket.

HAVE YOU HEARD?

Marshall is coming off his third-straight season playing in the NCAA Tournament and has been in the top 25 rankings every week since Oct. 15, 2019.

The Herd won the College Spring League Championship back in April with a 2-1 win over Bowling Green. Vinicius Fernandes was named the MVP and Oliver Semmel earned the Gold Glove award. Other key returners for the Herd this season are Milo Yosef, Collin Mocyunas, Ibrahima Diop, Gabriel Alves, João SouzaAlex Adjetey and Mohammed Seidu.

Yosef is coming off a season that saw him named 2021 United Soccer Coaches second team all-southeast region and 2021 first team all-Conference USA. The senior was tied for the team lead in assists last season with eight.

Fernandes is the team’s returning leader in points with 20 on eight assists and six goals during the 2021 campaign. He was also named 2021 second team all-Conference USA.

Semmle is coming off a season that saw the goalkeeper post a 10-4-3 record with a 1.12 goals against average. The graduate student earned two post-season honors last season, 2021 United Soccer Coaches third team all-southeast region and 2021 second team all-Conference USA.

SCOUTING VCU
The Rams were tabbed to finish third in the Atlantic-10 preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches, after finishing 9-7-2 last season.

VCU midfielder Damian Gallegos, who was an A-10 All-Rookie Team selection last year after collecting four goals and four assists.

SERIES HISTORY
Marshall trails in the all-time series 2-3-0. The last meeting came in 1994 in Richmond, Virginia. The Herd won the contest 2-1.
