NHL preseason begins Sept. 24 with Senators-Maple Leafs doubleheader

  • by

The road to the 2023 Stanley Cup begins the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 24, when the ‘Battle of Ontario’ rivals Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs begin a split-squad, day-night doubleheader at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto (1 and 7 pm, ET). Preseason’s opening day also features the Boston Bruins visiting the Philadelphia Flyers and the Arizona Coyotes meeting the St. Louis Blues in a neutral-site game at Wichita, Kansas.

Across the Atlantic, the Nashville Predators and San Jose Sharks will each play one preseason game against European club team opposition ahead of their Oct. 7 regular-season opener in Prague, Czech Republic. The Predators will face SC Bern in Bern, Switzerland on Oct. 3, while the Sharks will take on Eisbaren Berlin in Berlin, Germany on Oct. 4, all parts of the 2022 NHL Global Series.

The people of Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Elsipogtog First Nation, New Brunswick, winners of the Kraft Hockeyville competition from across Canada as the country’s most passionate hockey community in 2020 and 2021, respectively, will celebrate the grand prize of a preseason game between the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators. These community celebrations were postponed due to COVID-19 in each of the two previous years. The Canadiens and Senators will face off in nearby Gander, Nfld. (Steele Community Center) on Oct. 6 and Bouctouche, NB (JK Irving Centre) on Oct. 8.

Neutral-site preseason games will also be played in Abbotsford, BC (Edmonton vs. Vancouver, Oct. 5); Belleville, Ont. (Ottawa vs. Toronto, Sept. 30); Boise, Idaho (Arizona vs. Vegas, Oct. 8); Independence, Mo. (Dallas vs. St. Louis, Oct. 1); Milwaukee, Wis. (Chicago vs. Minnesota, Oct. 2); Ontario, Calif. (Los Angeles vs. San Jose, Sept. 28); Salt Lake City, Utah (Los Angeles vs. Vegas, Oct. 6); Tucson, Ariz. (Anaheim vs. Arizona, Sept. 25) and Tulsa, Okla. (Arizona vs. Dallas, Sept. 27).

After the Predators and Sharks play their regular-season openers in Prague on Oct. 7-8, the season gets underway in North America on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
