NHL On Tap: Bruins can tie consecutive home wins record to start season

  • by

Home sweet home for the Bruins

The Boston Bruins have been rolling so far, especially at TD Garden, where they have won 10 straight to open the season, one off the NHL record. They will get a chance to tie that record against the Chicago Blackhawks (7 pm ET; NHLN, NESN, NBCSCH, SN NOW). The Bruins (15-2-0) can equal the mark of 11 straight home wins to open a season, set by the Blackhawks in 1963-64 and equaled by the Florida Panthers last season. Boston’s streak of 10 is tied with two other teams, the Ottawa Senators (1925-26) and Montreal Canadiens (2016-17). The run means Jim Montgomery has yet to lose a game at TD Garden as coach of the Bruins, and he matched the NHL record for fewest games by a coach to reach 15 wins with a new team when Boston defeated the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday (John Paddock, Senators, 2007-08). Chicago (6-7-3) has lost two straight and four of their past five games (1-3-1). — Amalie Benjamin, staff writer

Reunion game for Huberdeau, Tkachuk

It’s certain to be an emotional game for players on both sides when the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers play for the first time this season (4 pm ET; NHLN, SN, TVAS2, BSFLX, SN NOW). The teams were involved in the biggest trade of the offseason, when the Flames traded forward Matthew Tkachuk to the Panthers for forward Jonathan Huberdeau and defenseman MacKenzie Weegar on July 22. Tkachuk, who played his first six NHL seasons with Calgary, has done well so far in Florida, leading the Panthers (9-7-1) with 22 points (six goals, 16 assists) in 15 games. It hasn’t gone as smoothly for Huberdeau, who played his first 10 seasons with the Panthers. He has eight points (two goals, six assists) in 13 games with the Flames (7-7-2) and returned Monday from missing three games due to an upper-body injury. But he has two points (one goal, one assist) in two games back in the lineup, and no player has more points at FLA Live Arena than Huberdeau’s 347 (113 goals, 324 assists). — Adam Kimelman, deputy managing editor

Logan’s run

Logan Thompson has been one of the great stories of the 2022-23 season, and likely is among the favorites for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year as the season approaches the quarter-mark. Thompson was pressed into action last season after injuries decimated the Golden Knights, and this season is 9-3-0 with a 2.27 goals-against average, .925 save percentage and two shutouts in 12 games. He is a huge reason why the Golden Knights (14-4-0) lead the Pacific Division and their .778 points percentage is third in the NHL, behind the Bruins (.882) and New Jersey Devils (.824). Thompson will be tested by the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday (10 pm ET; CBC, SN, CITY, ATTSN-RM, ESPN+). The Oilers (9-8-0) have the leading scorer in the NHL at center Connor McDavidwho has 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists), and forward Leon Draisaitlwho is tied for second with 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists). — Shawn P.
