NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to finalize the extension during owner meetings next week, according to reports

Roger Goodell is “expected to finalize” a new multiyear contract extension next week to remain in his role as NFL commissioner, according to a Monday report by ESPN.

The matter will be decided at the NFL’s owner meetings in Phoenix during a session with the league’s compensation committee on March 28, according to the report.

The NFL declined to comment on the report when contacted by USA TODAY Sports.

Goodell has been NFL commissioner since Sept. 1, 2006, and has had previous contract extensions in 2009, 2012 and 2017.

ESPN reports Goodell’s new deal, considering the league’s financial success, could be the most lucrative deal given to any commissioner in any sport.

While the length of the deal has not been agreed to, ESPN said the compensation committee and Goodell have discussed three years.

Goodell, 64, is around the same age when former NFL commissioners Pete Rozelle and Paul Tagliabue resigned. Rozelle was 63, and Tagliabue was 65.

The report states an emphasis will be placed on identifying Goodell’s successor during his next deal.
