The Jazz are starting again with 18 first-round selections over the following seven drafts after losing Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. Once eight seasons as a coach, Snyder left after Ainge’s near-term vision was determined.
Snyder made it clear that he didn’t want to take part in a rebuild and argued that Utah needed “a new voice to continue to progress.” Although his departure was not the biggest change of the summer, he is effectively taking a professional break.
Anyone with even a passing knowledge of basketball could notice the absence of connection between Gobert and Mitchell. The two stars with impeccable characters just didn’t seem to mesh anymore.
Every time Mitchell threw the ball to Gobert, saw him fumble it. And then Mitchell’s body language created a four-letter expletive, this was obvious. No words were ever exchanged in public, but you were aware.

NBA News: Utah Jazz has secured enough selections
In a move reminiscent of Ainge’s time in Boston, Gobert was traded to Minnesota about a month after Snyder announced his resignation. In 2013, Ainge acquired a plethora of first-round picks in exchange for then-Celtics stalwarts Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, as well as current Celtics stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, from the struggling Brooklyn Nets. This time around, Ainge pushed the Timberwolves for a ransom.
If you count Kessler and Agbaji, who were both selected in the 2022 NBA Draft, Utah now owns nine first-round picks from the Wolves and Cavaliers. In exchange for Gobert, the Wolves sent the Jazz a selection swap in 2026. Also, three unprotected picks in 2023, 2025, and 2027, as well as a top-five protected pick in 2029.
For Mitchell, they exchanged two picks (2026 and 2028) and unprotected first picks in the years 2025, 2027, and 2029 with the Cavaliers. Oh, and there were also six more players in the transaction in addition to Kessler and Agbaji.
The Jazz have authority over 18 first-round picks between now and 2029, including their own, in part because of Ainge. Best of all, they got a good price on Gobert. It’s likely that no other club would have offered Utah as many assets. It may be in exchange for a center who, although being a top-rim defender. He does nothing offensively, is 30 years old, and has an enormous deal.
