The ghost of radiation from mobile phone towers came to haunt back with villagers of Nachinola demanding the stand of the local panchayat vis-à-vis the setting up of such towers in the village.

Raising the issue at the gram sabha on Sunday, a local Yoganand Naik said there were talks of setting up one such tower in the government primary school in the village which will be harmful for the young children who attend the school.

Nachinola Sarpanch, Freddy Fernandes informed the gram sabha members that as per new government policy on mobile phone tower, nobody can raise objection against the tower.

“We cannot go against the government policy but our sympathies are with the concerns raised by the people of the village. We will support the locals but we cannot object,” Fernandes said.

The villagers informed the gram sabha about the recent incident in Siolim-Marna village where locals opposed the setting up of the tower near the primary health center.

Dr Sandeep Naik, a resident of Nachinola informed the gram sabha that there was no visible radiation effect on the people as per claims made by a section of the people.

The sarpanch assured the locals that the panchayat will arrange a meeting with the villagers and Indus Towers, the company installing the mobile phone towers so that the company can address the fears of the people.

The gram sabha also raised the issue of littering and sorting out of garbage which was raising a stink and causing nuisance in the village.

The sarpanch informed that the panchayat was coming up with a material recovery facility (MRF) shade near the electricity sub-station within six months which will resolve the problem once for all.

On the development front, the panchayat has decided to renovate the panchayat hall by utilizing the Golden Jubilee fund released by the State government for the 60 years of Goa’s Liberation.

The panchayat has also proposed to set up a shopping complex in the village through the Deen Dayal Infra Scheme,
