Winning a Golden Ball Trophy is something that every soccer player aims to get.
Lekima Gonerau was the lucky one out of all. His achievement in getting this award was possible through hard work and determination.
Mr Gonerau, of Burenitu village, Rakiraki said he was happy that his hard work was appreciated.
“I am still shocked.
“Receiving the golden ball award is something I didn’t expect and it came to me as a surprise,” he said.
He said his interest in soccer started when he was little and he used to watch his elder brother play and train for Rakiraki and Nadi team.
“My brother motivated me to grow interest in soccer and from that day on, I decided to become like him. He is my role model,” Mr. Gonerau said.
He started playing for Labasa when he was in primary school. He then got selected in the Under 20 national team.
“Soccer is special because one gets to show their talents. The best moment for me during my soccer journey was being selected in the final squad for the World Cup Qualifier to Qatar this year,” he said.
He said winning BOG meant a lot not only to him, but also to the Labasa Football.
“Our fans have started doubting us after losing a few of our League games, so we wanted to prove all critics wrong,” he said.
Mr. Gonerau is married with a daughter and he thanked them for their support.
“The Golden ball trophy maybe awarded to me, but that award is for all the Labasa Football players, officials, families and fans.
