Mock trade has Nets trading Royce O’Neale for Jonathan Kuminga

The Brooklyn Nets are currently in their offseason and while the 2023 NBA Draft is a little more than a month away from now, it is still interesting to contemplate certain trades that have been thrown into the NBA Twitter space. At this point, Brooklyn is enjoying the downtime that comes with the offseason while trying to figure out various matters at the same time.

While the Nets have to think about who they would like to draft in June and who to consider for their Summer League team, they still have to think about how much they’re willing to pay to retain talented forward Cam Johnson, who is a restricted free agent this summer. Also, Ben Simmons will be making a little over $37 million next season, but is recovering from a nerve impingement in his back that ended his 2022-23 season prematurely in March.

Those are just two of the matters that Brooklyn has to consider this summer, but there are mock trades that fans can ponder as well. There is one mock trade that is interesting to consider from various angles: forward Royce O’Neale for Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga.

The mock trade

Brooklyn Nets receive: Jonathan Kuminga

Golden State Warriors receive: Royce O’Neale

Should the Nets do this trade?

While Royce O’Neale was a vital part of the Nets during both versions of the team, he represents a surplus that Brooklyn has at the wing position. One of the issues that plagued the Nets during the season was the lack of depth at the guard and big man positions. Even though Jonathan Kuminga has not made much progress breaking into, he has a tremendous amount of talent and could play alongside center Nic Claxton while providing size at the same time. Kuminga also shot 35.3% from three-point land so he can provide some value from behind the three-point line as well.

Verdict: Yes, the Nets should do this trade if it’s on the trade.
