Mobile Phone Addiction Enters Classrooms | Mangaluru News

MANGALURU: Majority of campuses in the district have been witnessing a mobile addiction menace among students. According to educational institution heads, increased gadget addiction is being witnessed after the pandemic.
The menace is so high that students use cell phones even when the classes are on. To curb the menace, some institutions don’t allow cell phones on campus at all, whereas others allow them with certain riders. If found violating the same, they are confiscated, returned after a few days, or never returned.
The oldest UG college in the city confiscates about 15-20 cell phones per day from students who use them during class time. The cell phones are returned only after the end-semester examinations with a fine.
“The students are allowed to carry mobile phones in their bags, but they cannot use them within the campus and strictly not inside classrooms. In order to counsel on gadget addiction and other issues, we have recently appointed about eight professional counselors on campus. They conduct sessions on various topics, ranging from gadget addiction, substance abuse to any other personal or social issues that a student is facing. Those students with gadget addiction are picked up and counseled further,” shared a senior official of the institution. To keep students engaged all the time and away from cell phones, the college conducts a lot of academic, extra, and co-curricular activities.
During the PTA at meeting and interaction University College recently, parents expressed concern about the use of mobile phones by students. The college authorities point out that it is the responsibility of the parents to curb gadget addiction and not the college.
Meanwhile, NEP batch UG students do require to get cell phones to college campus for doing their academic work. “We do allow cell phones for NEP batch students for official work. Otherwise, it’s strictly prohibited,” said the college principal Anasuya Raiadding they would come up with some guidelines for cell phone usage at the campus.
There are some colleges that don’t allow cell phones at all on campus. Kurian, principal of Alva’s College, Moodbidri said no student, both UG and PG, are allowed to bring cell phones. “One can bring cell phones for some official work; the same must be brought to the attention of the class head. It is never returned if confiscated,” he stressed.
