MLB News: Former Mets outfielder Chuck Carr dies at the age of 55

Fhormer New York Mets outfielder Chuck Carr has passed away at the age of 55, after a long battle with health issues.

It is believed that cancer was Carr‘s cause of death and tributes have been pouring in from across the world of baseball.

Who was Chuck Carr?

Carr played baseball in New York in 1990 and 1991 and he spent eight years in the majors.

He also led the National League with 58 stolen bases for the expansion of Florida Marlins in 1993, before he stole 32 bases in the strike-shortened 1994 season.

It was when Carr was playing with the Brewers back in 1997 that he came up with one of the most renowned sports quotes of that decade.

He ignored a take sign to swing on a 2-0 pitch and made an out. After the game Carr said “That ain’t Chuckie’s game. Chuckie hacks on 2-0”

Those comments led to him being sent to go and play baseball with the minors and, after refusing his assignment, he was cut by the team.

In an eight-season career, he played in 507 games, had 1,713 at-bats, 254 runs, 435 hits, 81 doubles, seven triples, 13 home runs, 123 RBI, 144 stolen bases, 149 walks, a .254 batting average , .316 on-base percentage, .332 slugging percentage, 569 total bases, 30 sacrifice hits, 10 sacrifice flies, and four Intentional walks.

Once his Major League Baseball career had come to an end, Carr did briefly play for the Long Island Ducks who were being managed by Bud Harrelson. He had been Carr‘s coach when the pair were both at the New York Mets.

He also spent some time playing in Taiwan after 1998.
